Short and Sweet
DataSkinny turns newly released macro data into granular, line-of-business metrics that drive day-to-day investment and operational decisions and strategy.
And yes, a DataSkinny is not only edible—it is apparently irresistibly delicious. Which is precisely what keeps me awake at night. Private equity and data conglomerates view nimble, independent proprietary datasets much like 19th-century sailors viewed the Galápagos tortoise: rare, exceedingly appetizing, and ripe for mass consumption.
The Tortoise Plays the Long Game
DataSkinny is built on the seventh iteration of a massive, dynamic input-output model of the U.S. economy. The first version debuted in 1994, powering two monthly reports: Direct-ICE and ICE-alert.
"ICE" stood for Industry Cost Escalation. These reports translated macro shifts into concrete cost-control and negotiation metrics for purchasing managers. This was long before the birth of modern supply chain analytics companies—and before the term "supply chain" even graced the cover of trade magazines.
Think happy tortoise on a pristine island, with no sailors yet in sight.
Fast forward 30 years and the original project moniker, Thinking Cap Solutions, has morphed into DataSkinny. Its catalog of 400 industry-specific sets of application-targeted metrics has soared to over a half-million variables. Older, familiar concepts like per-unit costs, margins, and demand strength still make the cut. However, they now share space with sophisticated measurements of pricing leverage, buyer-versus-seller negotiation strength, and earnings potential.
Think giant tortoise with databases that could sink a lesser vessel.
The Giant Tortoise—DataSkinny Paradox
While a metaphorical 19th-century sailor sees DataSkinny as an unwieldy logistical risk, a data naturalist sees a thing of beauty. Corporate conglomerates and private equity seek out easy-to-manage, easy-to-exploit cargo. DataSkinny, by contrast, is a complex organism thriving in its own rich ecosystem. It is a large, weighty asset that paradoxically delivers "the skinny"—providing the right data to the right person, right when they need it.
Showing the Tortoise Love
Where 19th-century sailors prized the tortoise merely for its meat, more enlightened denizens of the 21st century admire the creature for its intelligence, longevity, and obvious charm.
This distinction is at the heart of DataSkinny’s mission. When I mentioned earlier that the fight to remain an independent resource keeps me up at night, I was talking about this exact hurdle: finding and keeping an audience that sees DataSkinny not just for the sharp insights it delivers, but as a worthwhile endeavor worthy of support.
DataSkinny doesn’t answer to a venture-funded conglomerate. It belongs entirely to its supporting members.
